Challenger 601

The Challenger 601 is the version that fixed the original’s range problem, and it is a common sight on Palm Beach charters that need a wide cabin and a coast-to-coast leg. Winglets and General Electric engines took it to roughly 3,500 nautical miles. That covers everything this market flies domestically, including Los Angeles nonstop.

The Challenger 601 replaced the original’s Lycoming engines with General Electric CF34-3A turbofans and added winglets, raising both cruise performance and range. It seats nine to twelve in the same wide cabin, cruises at about 443 knots and flies roughly 3,500 nautical miles. Several sub-variants exist, and their avionics and interiors differ, so we confirm the specification of the actual aircraft being offered. Full specifications for the Challenger 601 are published by Bombardier.

Why the Challenger 601 Fits Palm Beach

Palm Beach to Van Nuys (KVNY) is roughly 2,000 nautical miles and well inside the 601’s range with a full cabin, which is the trip that separates it from the original Challenger 600 in this market.

Season traffic to and from the Northeast is its everyday work. Teterboro (KTEB), Westchester (KHPN) and Hanscom (KBED) are short legs for this airframe, and from December through March the corridor produces enough one-way flying to make empty legs worth a look.

For the equestrian community, the 601 handles the combination Wellington season travel tends to involve: a large group, a lot of baggage and a leg to Europe or South America that will need a fuel stop. We will lay out the stop and timing options before you book.

Vetting Behind Every Trip

Every operator, aircraft, and crew goes through our internal due diligence before we present any options. Our internal standards meet or exceed what the FAA requires:

  • FAR Part 135 charter operators for traditional private aircraft, or FAR Part 121 for airliner-size and group trips (or the foreign equivalent on international legs)
  • Operator subscription to Wyvern and ARGUS reviewed where the operator participates.
  • Pilot experience and operator incident history reviewed before we recommend an aircraft.
  • Fewer than 60 brokers worldwide hold Premium Wyvern Broker Member status, and Air Charter Advisors is one of them.
